Atchison Street

Many of the haunted places are homes and other buildings, but there are several haunted streets as well. Atchison Street, once called Ferry Street, is a steep hill that runs towards the Missouri River. In the early days of Atchison, buggy traffic was heavy on the street. A woman lost control of the horses that were pulling her buggy, and the buggy plummeted down the street into the river. Her body was never recovered. Men often hear the voice of a woman begging them to join her in the murky, muddy water of the river.

Benedictine College

Atchison's Catholic liberal arts college, Benedictine College was founded by Benedictine monks in 1858. Many believe that these monks still inhabit the college, continuing to look after and protect the school. There have also been reports of some of the dorm buildings, particularly Memorial Hall, having resident spirits. Some student residents of Memorial Hall have reported feeling a child climb into bed with them. There is a legend that a young girl gave birth in a closet in the dorm and the baby later died.

Another story of a dormitory haunting has a girl changing clothes in a closet in the same dorm when a dresser was shoved in front of the closet door and the girl was trapped. Thinking her roommate was playing a trick on her, the girl begged to be let out. However, the roommate was not in the room, and no one else entered the room until the girl started screaming.

Muchnic House

The Muchnic House was the site of frequent parties in the early 1900s. Following one such party, a maid had stayed up late cleaning up after the gala, and she overslept the next day. In a hurry to get downstairs to start her day, she fell down the servant's stairs to her death. Visitors to the home now often report lights on in the back stairway and the smell of bacon cooking in the kitchen when no one is there.

McInteer Villa

People passing the McInteer Villa on Kansas Avenue often report seeing figures in the windows when no one is in the house; and there are also reports of lights being turned on and off in the tower of McInteer Villa, an area that has no electricity.
